CHS can deliver any or all of the supports outlined above through a professional learning collaborative.  A professional learning collaborative engages professionals from one or multiple organizations in focused learning and action to strengthen their skills and elevate organizational performance.

  • A professional learning collaborative can be convened by a single nonprofit, an association of nonprofits, a foundation, or any other entity interested in facilitating nonprofit capacity building.
  • The basic approach is to choose a focus, engage participants, define goals, design and develop supports, and collaborate on learning and action to strengthen skills and elevate organizational performance.
  • The number of organizations participating in a collaborative could range from a few to dozens.
  • The time period could run from a few weeks to months.
  • The supports and activities are tailored for the project, and typically include a mix of online resources, virtual meetings, in-person strategy sessions, coaching, and technical assistance.

  1. PCMH Development. A statewide collaborative focused on patient-centered medical home (PCMH) development for teams of professionals from community health centers.  (24 organizations, convened by a state primary care association.)
  2. Charitable Clinic Standards. A statewide collaborative focused on developing a set of performance standards for charitable clinics. (7 organizations, convened by a state charitable clinic association.)
  3. Demonstrating Community Value. A statewide collaborative focused on demonstrating the community value of community behavioral health organizations.  (30 organizations, convened by a state association of community behavioral health organizations.
  4. Transforming Healthcare Leadership. A statewide collaborative focused on interprofessional teamwork and leadership development, for teams from hospitals, health systems, medical practices, community health centers, community behavioral health organizations, pharmacy organizations, health professions training, and social support organizations.  (40 teams over six cohorts, convened by a partnership between a state medical society, a state association of hospitals & health systems, a state nursing association, and the state public health agency.)
